Independence Day, or the Fourth of July, is undoubtedly the nation’s favorite holiday! Since the day marks the anniversary of the United States’ declaration of independence, it has traditionally been a festive occasion. It’s one of the most vibrant and intriguing holidays of the year, a chance to hang out with friends, eat your favorite dishes from the season, listen to music, and generally have a fantastic time.
Even though the day is relatively laid back, there is a necessary dress code that almost everyone adheres to. Wearing red, white, and blue is nearly compulsory! And while these complementary hues look well together, they also serve as our national colours and stand for significant ideals. Red stands for bravery and tenacity. White is a symbol of innocence and purity. The colour blue symbolises watchfulness, endurance, and justice.
The Declaration of Independence, adopted in July 1776, stated that the American colonies would cease to be under British control and become sovereign states. On July 2nd, Congress approved the declaration of independence, which was made public on July 4th. This sparked the celebrations that continue to this day.
Some facts about the 4th of July:
- $7.7 Billion is spent on food on the July 4th
- 150 Million hot dogs are eaten on July 4th
- Around $1.4 Billion is spent on beer and wine
