As the environment day is around the corner, we would like to talk about sustainability.
How we can help make the world a better place by choosing products that are sustainable. You can do this by buying products that are reusable and plastic-free, like Red Cup Living products.
We live in a world where single-use plastics have become the norm. It’s time for us to take a step back and rethink things.
‘78% of marine mammals are at risk of choking on plastic’
Single-use plastic is a scourge. It’s single-use for a reason: it breaks, it tears, it melts in the heat of your car or the cold of your freezer. It’s not sustainable, it’s not environmentally friendly, and it’s not even very good at its one job—to contain liquids!
‘Every three months, Americans throw enough aluminum in the landfills to build our nation’s entire commercial air fleet. ’
Recycling should be the last “R,” not the only “R.” Recycling is the most incorporated into people’s daily lives while being the least environmentally friendly of the three R's (reduce, reuse, and recycle). Its prominence is such that it frequently overshadows the other two R’s.
The most effective method is to reduce your consumption of throwaway products and/or those with disposable packaging. If you had no choice but to buy the item, your next step would be to repurpose it for something else once it had served its initial purpose. Finally, if everything else fails, recycle it and send it out to be processed and redistributed.
We all know the power of red lipstick (and red wine). But did you know that red is also the new green? Make sure to get your hands on an eco-friendly version of your favorite color! In fact, red is the new green! We know it sounds crazy, but we’ve got the science to back it up: using reusable products can reduce your carbon footprint by 30%! That’s a lot of CO2 emissions that don’t end up in our atmosphere.
‘If you walk a mile along an average US highway, you will see, on average, about 1,457 pieces of litter. ’
As you can see, recycling is supposed to be your final line of defense against a trip to the landfill or incineration. However, the most challenging part of altering people’s minds about recycling as their favorite “R” is changing their shopping habits. I recall justifying certain purchases because a portion of the transaction was recyclable. Food items in recyclable plastic tubs were frequently involved in these things. Despite the disposable nature of the packaging, I subconsciously believed that recycling would balance the environmental impact of my purchase. Recycling, in actuality, isn’t all that effective. Recycling alone will not be able to reverse the environmental damage caused by the manufacturing, shipping, and distribution of our purchases.
‘The only way forward, if we are going to improve the quality of the environment, is to get everybody involved. – Richard Rogers’
